Description: Let’s paint a few step by step watercolour projects together and then move into creating your own watercolour paintings from your own photographs. The basics of flat and gradient washes, knowing your paper, paints and brushes will all be covered in this class.
Materials:
  • White Staedtler Mars eraser
  • HB graphite pencils
  • Green painters tape as from a hardware store
  • A palette with small wells to put your tube paint into and leave open to dry before bringing to class.
  • It is also helpful to bring your tubes of paint with you to mix deep rich colours.
  • 12” x 16” Watercolour block of paper or cold pressed (medium texture 140 lb paper staple gunned or frog taped to a wooden board. (Scraps of watercolour paper are also helpful for testing your colours)
  • A blow drier
  • A rag
  • Paper towel
  • 2 yogurt containers for watercolour
  • A small round detail brush (all brushes should be a soft synthetic or similar brush)
  • Another old one like this for applying masking fluid
  • A 1 – 1 1/2” flat synthetic brush
  • A round brush about 1/2 at its widest and coming to a fine point, also synthetic
  • A bar of soap for removing masking fluid
  • Masking fluid (no tint nor orange)
  • Colours (minimum): Cerulean Blue / French Ultramarine Blue / Cadmium Yellow Medium /Aureolin Yellow or Lemon Yellow / Yellow Ochre / Cadmium Red / Alizarin Red / Burnt Sienna / Payne’s Gray/ Indian Red / Windsor Newton Green to the Blue side (I prefer Windsor Newton)
  • A couple of large flat white dessert plates from the $ Store for mixing larger washes

Times: 9 am – noon (total hours 3 x 5 – 6 = 15 – 18 hours)
Ages: 15 years to adult

Description: Learn the basics of drawing from using geometric shapes, site sized method, enveloping and other methods to arrive at a good facsimile of any subject, excluding portraits. Perspective will also be covered and a few techniques to achieve pleasing texture with graphite pencils.
Materials:
  • A 12” x 14” or smaller sketchbook with smooth paper.
  • A white Staedtler Mars eraser
  • A 4B graphite stick
  • a roll of toilet paper
  • Graphite pencils in F, HB, B, 2B, 4B, 6B softness H pencils will not be used.
  • a metal sharpener
